--------------------------

Al got into the room where Optimus and Scorpius were both sitting in front of a laptop, spying on Rose and Guardo through the Muggle video-camera that had been fixed and ingeniously concealed in Rose’s necklace, still muttering curses at Guardo. He paused when he reached Optimus who was staring intently at the screen before them.

He’d never cease to be amazed by the fact that both Scorpius and Optimus looked so at ease with Muggle inventions. It was rather ironic that the most cunning Wizarding cons were successful because of Muggle technology —CCTV, cell phones, lasers and the lot— that most Wizarding grifters failed to make use of. Pureblood elitists would be choking on their tongues at the thought of it and yet, there they were, Scorpius Malfoy and Optimus Zabini, with blood so pure Al often joked that they were inbred, careers thriving because of Muggle inventions.

“He’s vile,” Al hissed as he glared at the screen where Guardo was openly gawking and fawning over Rose.

Optimus sighed as Guardo moved —for the millionth time— to stroke Rose’s hand, only for her to draw her hand back, pretending to fan herself. “I know.”

“We’ll get back at him,” Scorpius said determinedly, his eyes locked onto the screen, “He wants something for nothing. We’ll give him nothing for something.”

“First Rule of The Con,” Optimus sighed.

When the quartet of them had first started out in the grifting world, they’d made a few ground rules for their cons so as to differentiate them from ruthless and inhumane grifters out there who were willing to do anything for money. The simplest and most important rule was that they couldn’t cheat an honest man. That being said, they’d look for greedy targets who wanted profit without doing work —something for nothing— and leave them with no proceeds for a lot of money —nothing for something—, thus completing the con without compromising the most important Rule of The Con.

It was simple, it was classy, it was efficient and it lessened the guilt: it was really hard to feel sorry for taking the money of a dishonest man. They were practically like Wizarding Robin Hoods who didn’t donate their earnings to the poor. To be fair, had they been well off, they would have done so. Heck, who was he kidding? Had they been well off, they wouldn’t have been grifting.

Al shook his head. “Rule of The Con or not, if he so much as touches Rose anywhere he shouldn’t be touching,” he growled as he toyed with his wand, “I will rip him apart with my bare hands and hang him on a tree by his intestines after I rip his genitals off and gag him with it.”

Optimus smirked. Al’s sadistic side that thrived on violence hardly ever made appearances outside of situations that concerned Rose’s safety. “If he touches Rose, I’m not sure there’ll be much of him to rip apart when Scorpius is done with him. He made a promise to her that he’d do anything to protect her and make sure she comes back unharmed. You know how he is with promises.”

“Screw Scorpius,” Al told Optimus before turning to Scorpius with a grin on his face, “No offence, mate, she was my cousin first before she was your friend.”

Scorpius shook his head in amusement. “There will be no need for threats of violence. Nothing is going to happen to her because we’re not going to let anything happen. There are four of us playing the con and there’s only one target. We can take him down even without our wands,” Optimus let out a barking laugh at that, “‘Sides, she’s smart enough to weasel herself out of anything, pun intended,” he said, darting away laughingly from the pillow Al threw his way. “However…if anything happens, I’ll let you throw in a few punches and a few kicks, how’s that for a deal?”

“I’ll hold you to your word,” Al chuckled.

“Trust me,” Scorpius said with a charming grin, “I’ve got a really good feeling about this.”

Scorpius would soon have to eat his words.
